DOHA – A senior Hamas official said on Thursday that ceasefire negotiations with Israel had continued through mediators over the past two days despite Israel’s renewed military offensive in Gaza, according to a report by Qatar-based Al Jazeera.
Basem Naim, a Hamas official, told the outlet that U.S. envoy Steve Witkoff had relayed a new proposal to the group via mediators shortly before Israel’s latest operations.
The plan, described by Naim as a “bridging proposal,” called for a temporary ceasefire, prisoner exchanges, increased aid access to Gaza, and a return to preliminary agreements from earlier negotiations.
“This proposal would open borders, allow aid, and move talks to a second phase,” Naim was quoted as saying.
He asserted that negotiations had neared a breakthrough before Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu ordered the recent strikes, which he claimed were driven by “internal political calculations” to placate far-right factions in Israel’s governing coalition.
Naim did not provide evidence for the allegation. Israel has repeatedly stated it will continue military operations in Gaza until Hamas’ governing and military capabilities are dismantled.
Naim emphasized that Hamas would not accept any agreement failing to ensure a permanent ceasefire and full Israeli withdrawal from Gaza.
